Bible Besties | Elijah

ByHeather Hart

Today’s Bible Besties devotion is about Elijah.

And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

1 Kings 19:9

Devotion for Today

Elijah had had it. Life wasn’t going his way, and he had had enough. He found a secluded spot in the mountains and had himself a little pity party.

That’s where God found him.

After giving him time to rest and get his strength up, God asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:9).

In response, Elijah lamented his life. He told God just how bad things had gotten.

God didn’t chastise him. He didn’t reassure Elijah that things would get better soon. Instead, God reminded Elijah of who He was. He took the focus off of Elijah and put it squarely on Himself.

And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.

1 Kings 19:11-12

I love the reminder that God isn’t destructive, but instead He is a still small voice (KJV).

And Elijah recognized God immediately and went out to speak with Him. Again, God asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” That’s when Elijah dug in. His answer remained the same.

And again, God didn’t chastise him. He didn’t reassure him. Instead, God told him what was next. Sometimes that’s how it is. No matter where we are at, we have to put one foot in front of the other and do the next right thing.

Even when we don’t feel inspired.

Even when we aren’t sure what’s going to happen.

God doesn’t call us to have it all figured out. He calls us to follow Him.

* You can read this part of Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19:9-18.
