Bible Besties | Hannah
Today’s Bible Besties devotion is about Hannah.
And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”
1 Samuel 1:20
Devotion for Today
The only thing worse than sharing your husband with another woman, is for that woman to make you feel inferior. That’s what happened to Hannah. Peninnah lorded over Hannah that she had children and Hannah didn’t. Talk about rubbing salt in a wound.
In Hannah’s time, children were considered a blessing from God. A woman’s worth was often wrapped up in whether or not she was able to bear children.
For this reason, Hannah poured her heart out God, begging Him for a child of her own.
And God heard her prayer. He blessed Hannah with a baby boy.
God answered her prayer and she returned to praise Him.
Hannah is a great example for us. When God answers our prayers, it can be easy to just keep going. To move on to the next thing. Hannah reminds us to slow down and praise God for what He’s doing in our lives.
But Hannah’s story didn’t stop with praise for the answered prayer. Hannah dedicated her child to God. She praised Him for what He had done, and then gave her blessing back to Him.
So often we hold our blessings tightly. We think to ourselves “God gave me this, and it’s mine.” When really, God answered your prayer, but the blessing still belongs to Jesus. The glory belongs to the Lord.
