Bible Besties | Mary
Today’s Bible Besties devotion is about Mary.
“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
Luke 1:38
Devotion for Today
You’ve probably never found yourself face-to-face with an angel, but that’s what happened to Mary. But that wasn’t the most fantastic part. God had called her to be the mother of His son. That’s way more than we can unpack in a single devotion, but I wanted to call attention to the fact that God was calling Mary to do something that wasn’t going to be easy.
Have you ever been there?
Has God ever called you to do something that required you stepping out of your comfort zone?
Peter is often the go-to example for this because he walked on water with Jesus. He got out of the boat. But Peter asked Jesus to call him out onto the water (Matthew 14:28), Mary was caught off guard. The angel came to her. She didn’t seek it out. Even Zachariah had been praying for a child to call his own (Luke 1:13). Mary never dreamed of being the mother of the messiah.
So how about it? Has God ever called you to do something unexpected?
It could be something as small as calling a friend or as exciting as going into the mission field. Sometimes God calls us in expected ways, and other times He catches us completely by surprise.
But I love Mary’s response to this. As shocked as she was, she prayed for God’s will be done. And when we’re called to the unexpected, that should be our response as well. Mary didn’t ask for the details. She didn’t suggest alternative methods. She simply prayed for God’s will to be done.
We all need a friend like Mary. Someone who is willing to follow God anywhere… even when it’s hard.
I once heard a speaker talk about how God called her to brush this guys hair that was at the bus stop. Surely she thought she had heard the Lord wrong. But she couldn’t shake it, so eventually she bought a brush, went back (hoping he was gone, but he wasn’t). and asked to brush his hair. He burst into tears because he was headed somewhere special and had been wishing he could fix his hair first but had no way to do it.
I’ve never been called to do something like that, but I know God calls us each every day. But we don’t just need to listen for Him, we need to willingly do what He asks.
