Bible Besties | Moses

ByHeather Hart

Today’s Bible Besties devotion is about Moses.

God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3:14

Devotion for Today

God called to Moses out of a burning bush, and Moses was there for it. He responded immediately. But God slowed his roll, saying, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5).

Moses didn’t doubt God… until God got to the part where He wanted Moses to be His spokesman. That’s where Moses stepped on the brakes. “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (v. 11).

It wasn’t even so much that Moses doubted God. What he doubted was himself. And God didn’t reassure him at all by reminding him that He would go with him.

Have you ever been there?

Have you ever been hung up by your own fears and failures?

That’s where Moses was. God was literally speaking to him from a burning bush that wasn’t even being burned, and Moses couldn’t get over the fact that he was just… well, him.

That same God that spoke to Moses from the burning bush is the same God that speaks to us today. We might not encounter Him in an unnatural phenomenon, but He speaks to us just the same. He speaks to us through His Word and in our hearts. He’s that still small voice that we hear inside of us when we’re filled with His Holy Spirit (1 Kings 19:12).

Like Moses, God doesn’t tell us how great we are or fluff our tail feathers. Instead, He reminds us that He is the great I am. And if He is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)? He reminds us that He created us and formed us, that He has called us by name and we are His (Isaiah 43:1). It’s less about who we are and more about who He is.

Moses might not have gotten that at first, but the more time he spent talking to God, the more he understood. This was only the beginning of a long, personal relationship between the two of them. And that’s why Moses is our Bible Bestie for today. Most of us can relate to Moses, but more importantly, he models what a relationship with God looks like. Even when he doubted himself, he always went back to God to seek His will. And we can do the same.
