Bible Besties | Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

ByHeather Hart

Today’s Bible Besties devotion is about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt…

Daniel 3:25

Devotion for Today

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were captives in a foreign land. King Nebuchadnezzar had besieged Jerusalem and taken them back to Babylon where they were required to learn and act like Chaldeans.

Then, King Nebuchadnezzar made a new rule. Whenever he played music, everyone was required to bow down and worship the golden statue he had made.

Because Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were faithful Israelites, they refused to do so. They knew that the Lord their God was the one true God, and they vowed to worship Him alone.

When the king heard that they weren’t obeying, he called them to him and gave them one more chance to do as he ordered. If they didn’t he was going to burn them alive in a fiery furnace. But still they refused, saying, “If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

If you’re familiar with this story, you know how it ends. The three Israelites were thrown into the fire, and Jesus joined them there. Even though the fire raged around them, they weren’t singed, not even a bit.

Sometimes life is like that. We find ourselves amidst the fire, but when we take a breath and look around, we can clearly see that Jesus is right there with us. The fire is hot, but it’s not consuming us.

Have you ever been there? Maybe you’re there right now. Maybe you need the reminder that life is hard, but God is good, and He is right there with you no matter what it is you’re going through.

Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” That’s the God we have.

No matter what we’re facing, big or small, our God is there—He is with us.

If you are walking through the fire, I hope you know you are among good company. Just like He was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, He is with us wherever we go.

* The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego can be found in Daniel 3.
