Devotion for Today

If you could have anything in the world, what would it be?

For Solomon, the answer was wisdom to lead God’s people.

He could have asked for riches. He could have asked for a long life. He could have asked for anything. But Solomon chose wisdom for the glory of God. And that’s what God gave him: wisdom and discernment. But God also blessed him with riches and honor.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Solomon is such a perfect picture of that. He sought God’s wisdom, and God gave him so much more.

Solomon is known to be the wisest man who ever lived. In the book of Ecclesiastes he wrote that, “when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun” (2:11).

Solomon learned something we all have to face at some point in our lives: Our lives are but a vapor. The grades we worked for in high school? They don’t matter once we start college. That ball game our team won, no one will remember next season. How quickly we got the newest cell phone model—no one cares. It’s all meaningless.

That truth can either cause us to give up and cease striving, or it can point us to Jesus. Because Jesus does matter. He matters for all eternity. And because of Him, we know we can live out our eternity with Him. While worldly achievements and belongings will pass away, Jesus lasts forever.

That’s why Solomon is the perfect Bible bestie for today. He sought God’s wisdom when others would have pursued the things of the world. What are you seeking after today? Is it wisdom and discernment, or fame and riches?
