Bible Besties | The Adulterous Woman

ByHeather Hart

Today’s Bible Besties devotion is about The Adulterous Woman.

“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

John 8:11

Devotion for Today

Everyone knew her sin. She had been caught and now they wanted to stone her for being an adulteress. And they were right. She wasn’t living the way God called her to live. The word of God commanded she be put to death.

But no one counted on Jesus.

Wanting to test Him, they asked, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” (John 8:44-5).

Jesus responded, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”

That wasn’t what they were expecting.

Everyone sins. While it had yet to be written, Paul wrote in Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

All of them, and all of us.

While we don’t know her name, the adulterous woman could be a picture of any of us. We’re all sinners. And most of us have been caught in a sin a time or two. But even if no one has ever called you out, God knows. God knows the thoughts in our head (Psalm 139:1-2). He knows the depths of our sinfulness.

Which is why we need to know the depths of His forgiveness.

Jesus didn’t condemn the woman caught in adultery, and He doesn’t condemn us. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus lived and died for us. So we could be forgiven. And we are forgiven. Not just for the sins we’re caught in, but in every sin we’ve ever entertained. Jesus’ blood that was shed on the cross covers all of them. And all the ones that are still to come.

Romans 8:1 tells us that there is no condemnation for those who belong to Jesus. None.

So if you’re struggling with a sin, or something from your past, I hope you’ll make a Bible bestie out of the adulterous woman and let her remind you that you’re forgiven and free.
