Blessings from the Heart

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.

James 1:7

Over and over again God’s Word tells us that God wants what’s best for us.

Psalm 34:7 says if we delight in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our hearts. Jesus said Himself, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8). And in Romans, Paul told us that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him (8:28).

In His heart, Jesus wants to love on us. He wants to give us good things. He wants to bless us. Just like we do with our own loved ones (Matthew 7:9-10). But loving someone and wanting to give them good things doesn’t always equal getting everything we ask for.

Paul prayed for the thorn in his flesh to be removed three times, but it never was. Have you ever wondered how God’s desire to bless us and unanswered prayers can co-exist? If He really loved us, why would He withhold healing or blessings?

If you’ve ever asked that question, you’re not alone. But the Bible covers that, too. It’s God’s love letter to us, and the more we immerse ourselves in it, the clearer we see the heart of Christ.

James wrote that if we ask for something and don’t receive it, it’s because we ask with the wrong motives (4:3). King Solomon basically said we always think we’re right, but God judges our hearts (Proverbs 21:2). The tenth commandment is not to covet. And the writer of Hebrews encourages us to be content with what we have (13:5).

I think Jesus said it best though. He encouraged us to love God with all our hearts, souls, and minds (Mark 12:30). We can want good things, but we should never want them more than we want Jesus.

I’m an ESV girl, but I bought a Passion translation years ago. I don’t use it for study or theology, etc. But I love how poetic it is. In Proverbs 16:6, it uses the phrase “surrendered worship” – and I think that’s the key. We can ask God for the desires of our hearts, but our worship of Him can’t be dependent on a “yes” answer. We can pray and hope and still be content in the moment.

That’s what Jesus wants from us. His heart longs for us to be content in Him. And when we seek Him first, the rest will follow. Our desires will align with His will for us, and He will bless us beyond measure.
