Devotion for Today

Christmas is Coming

She looked at her sister out of the corner of her eye. Here she was slaving away, and there she sat, doing nothing. Didn’t she know she would rather be spending time with their guests, too, but someone had to get the work done? When she couldn’t stand it any longer, she spoke up. Jesus was like a brother to them, surely, He would take her side.

“Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?” Of course He did. She knew He did. Without waiting for an answer, she continued, “Tell her then to help me.”[1]

But then the unexpected happened; Jesus sided with Mary…

John chapter one is one of the most beautiful passages in all of Scripture. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”[2]  “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”[3] That’s Christmas.

The God who created the world, who spoke it into existence, stepped into His creation. He created us with free will, and we chose to separate ourselves from Him. But God so loved the world, that He didn’t give up on us. He stepped in and did what we could never do. He lived a perfect life and died a sinner’s death to make a way for us to come back to Him.

The Christmas season gets so busy and stressful, that I constantly find myself needing a way back to Jesus. A moment to stop being Martha and join Mary at the feet of Jesus.

There are so many tasks left to do before Christmas. There is a turkey to cook and last-minute presents to wrap. There are friends and family to serve. And it is so easy to get caught up in all the doing that I miss the most important parts of Christmas—the being.
