Commanded at the Feet of Jesus

Bible Verse for Today

“When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, ‘Fear not.’”

Revelation 1:17

Commanded at the Feet of Jesus

I can’t imagine coming face-to-face with Jesus, but that’s what happened to John on the island of Patmos. It had been years since he stood at the feet of Jesus as He hung on the cross. Years since Jesus stood with the disciples in the locked room where they had hidden from the Jews (John 20:19-23). It had been years since they saw Him by the sea (John 21). Years since they watched Him ascend into heaven (Acts 1:6-11). And here He was. Talking to John (Revelation 1:9-16).

Of course, John did what anyone would do… he fainted (v. 17).

When he awoke, Jesus said: “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades” (vv. 17-18). What a great God we have. Amen?

John was obviously stunned. Who wouldn’t be? This Jesus, while He was still the same teacher John knew and loved, He was a far cry from the humble carpenter’s son. He was clothed in white with a golden sash around his chest. “The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters” (vv. 13-15). The lamb of God (John 1:29) was roaring like the lion of Judah (Revelation 5:5).

John had this amazing vision of Jesus, but he was still in exile. Jesus didn’t call him home or set him free. He left John where he was, living alone on the rocky shore.

And I wonder how often that’s what Jesus does for us, too. He loves us and uses us where we’re at without changing our circumstances. We view it as unanswered prayer, when really, God just wants to use us right where we are.

It doesn’t matter where we are in life, God can use us. We can shine the light of Jesus into those around us, whether that’s our children, coworkers, or nurses and doctors (Matthew 5:16). We can love others like Jesus loves us (John 13:34-35). Even when our circumstances stay the same.

It doesn’t matter where we are in life, God can use us. Share on X
