December 4 Devotional
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth
John 1:14
The very first verse in the gospel of John paints a picture of the creation of the world:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
In the beginning Jesus was there. When God spoke the world into being, that was Jesus. He is the Word of God and He is woven throughout the entire Bible. He has always been and will always be.
But the gospels give us a glimpse of the heart of God. Jesus, the Word of God, became flesh and dwelt among us.
And God’s Word does not return to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11).
That’s the promise of Christmas.
The Word of God came into the world on a rescue mission. And He completed that mission on the cross. He returned to God the Father with the words, “It is finished” (John 19:30).
