December 5 Devotional
‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’
Acts 20:35
Each Christmas we give and we get.
Exchanging presents is always a delight whether you’re the giver or the getter. But Jesus said that it is better, more holy, to be the giver. This is, because we were created in the image of God, a way we can shine the light of Christ into the lives of those around us.
On Christmas, God gave us the gift of Himself; He gave us His Son. To honor that gift, we give gifts to others.
1 John 4:19 says that we love because God first loved us. And that should be our motive for giving as well. God has blessed us, so that we may bless others.
Years ago, the pastor at my old church preached a sermon with three points that have stuck with me. He said we are: Told to Tell. Saved to Share. And Won to Win.
When Jesus lives in our hearts, His love overflows onto those around us. He has given us the greatest gift—the gift of salvation. And because of that, we are called to imitate Him and give selflessly to others.
