Embracing Your Spiritual Gifts

Imagine you’re at a birthday party. The guest of honor is unwrapping presents, each one unique, each one chosen with love and thoughtfulness. Among the gifts, there’s one from you. You’ve selected it carefully, considering what would be most useful and bring the most joy.

Now imagine that your friend looks at your gift, thanks you, but then puts it aside without opening it. They don’t explore what’s inside the package, don’t use it, or even acknowledge it again. How would you feel?

This can be an illustration of what happens when we don’t recognize or use our spiritual gifts.

God, in His infinite wisdom and love, has bestowed upon each of us particular gifts. These aren’t just for us but are meant to benefit others—”for the common good,” as 1 Corinthians 12:7 states.

Our spiritual gifts may vary—we might have the gift of teaching, encouragement, service, prophecy, or others. But each gift is equally valuable and necessary in God’s Kingdom. When we embrace and use our spiritual gifts, we not only honor God, but we also contribute to His Kingdom work and bring joy to those around us.
