Giving Thanks at the Feet of Jesus

Giving Thanks at the Feet of Jesus

Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem when He encountered a group of lepers. They lifted their voices and asked Jesus to have mercy on them and heal them. So that’s what Jesus did; He healed them. One of them (a foreigner) came back and fell at the feet of Jesus with thanksgiving.

But here’s the thing: Jesus healed ten lepers… ten. Yet when we read the story in Luke 17, we learn that only one of the ten came back to thank Him. Jesus asked, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?” (v. 17).

And today, I’m wondering how often we find ourselves with the other nine. We reach out to Jesus, He answers our prayers, but then we forget to give Him the credit. We forget to come back to Jesus and fall at His feet with thanksgiving.

This is profoundly obvious in my life right now. I have been praying for months for healing from chronic migraines. When healing finally came, I didn’t look back. I didn’t stop to thank Jesus. I was just excited to get back to my everyday life. In doing so, I became like one of the lepers that didn’t praise Jesus for what He has done.

Have you ever found yourself there? Maybe it wasn’t healing you prayed for, but something else. But whatever it was, He gave it to you, yet you failed to turn back and give Him praise. If so, you need to know you’re not alone.

But here’s the great thing about Jesus: He is gracious and merciful. Full of loving kindness. He doesn’t hold our failures against us. Even when we don’t turn back to thank Him immediately, He’s right there waiting when we do. Waiting to tell us, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well” (v. 19).

He turned back to give thanks to Jesus, but what about the other nine? Share on X
