God Knows Our Thoughts

ByHeather Hart

You are reading the “Known & Loved” devotional series.

You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.

Psalm 139:2

Devotion for Today

God knows each of us intimately. He knows what we’ve done and the thoughts in our head.

And get this: He loves us anyway, because God is love (1 John 4:8).

Now, I’m not saying you’re unlovable. But none of us wants our thoughts broadcast for the whole world to see. At least I don’t.

But God knows them all.

He tells us to think about things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8).

Instead, we think about how much longer our pastor’s sermon is going to last, or how many pages are left in the chapter. We may be completely distracted when talking to someone and realize we missed what they said. You might be looking down on someone for something they did or didn’t do.

Have you ever been there? Maybe it’s something else, like someone’s hair, but whatever it is, God knows.

He knows all our thoughts. Even the innermost thoughts we will never give voice to. And He knows all of our failures. He knows all the times we’ve lost our temper with our husbands, our kids, or the guy at work. He knows that thing in our past we did that still haunts us today. He knows it all, because He knows us all.

And despite all that, despite knowing us completely, He also loves us unconditionally. He loves us with an everlasting love, a love that holds us fast. Agape love.

Do you ever need that reminder?
