Heartbroken at the Feet of Jesus

“Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.”

John 19:25

Devotion for Today

Heartbroken at the Feet of Jesus

Mary watched as her son, battered and bruised, hung on a cross and soldiers cast lots for his clothing. Helpless to do anything but cry.

Mary was grieving the loss of her son. Not just her loss, but His pain. And Jesus cared about her welfare. He is the God of all comfort (1 Corinthians 1:3-4) and He wanted to make sure she had someone to console her and share in her grief. I don’t know why, but He chose one of His closest disciples and assigned him the task.

As I ponder on this today, I’m touched by the fact that Jesus never failed to put others first. Even in excruciating pain Himself, Jesus saw His mother’s pain, spoke to her, and provided for her. It reminds me of another time Jesus set His own pain aside and had compassion for a crowd of people. He had just lost His cousin, John the Baptist, and was looking for some time alone… but that wasn’t to be.

The crowds arrived in the desolate place He was heading to just before He did, and when He saw them, he had compassion for them (Matthew 14:13-14). He gave up His one-on-one time with His Heavenly Father to minister to those who sought Him out—despite His pain.

Isn’t that a poignant example of the love Christ has for us? Jesus is never too busy for His people. He will never hear our cries and roll His eyes. He doesn’t look at us and remind us that others are worse off. Instead, He looks at us with steadfast love (Psalm 136).

When we come to the feet of Jesus with a heart that’s breaking, Jesus cares (1 Peter 5:7). He sees us and loves us right where we are. Amid our heartache, He is there.

Psalm 56:9 says this, “This I know, that God is for me.” And that’s something we can count on. God is for us, no matter what else is going on in the world. He loves us and nothing can take that away from us (Romans 8:31-39).
