Honoring Wisdom
We’ve talked about the importance of pursing wisdom, but what about after you’ve found it? Do you ever want to throw caution to the wind and do something crazy? Okay maybe not something totally crazy, but something easy. Maybe you had a hard day at work, and you don’t want to cook dinner. Wisdom says to cook anyway because eating out isn’t really in the budget, but something in you yearns to take the easy way out. Have you ever been there? I definitely have and that’s just one example of not heeding wisdom’s call. Can you think of something specific in your own life?
Wisdom is having self-control. It’s doing what’s right because you know it’s right. Have you ever heard the saying that knowledge is knowing that tomatoes are a fruit, and wisdom is knowing they don’t belong in fruit salad. Wisdom is knowledge in action. It’s not just knowing, but it’s doing. Kind of like our faith. James 2:18 says, “But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” Wisdom is the same. It’s not just words that we speak or knowledge that we hold. It’s living out that knowledge.
Proverbs 4:13 tells us to hold onto instruction; to guard it because it’s our life. Wisdom is hard earned and even harder to keep. There are forces all around us trying to convince us that what we know to be true isn’t true at all. We have to stand for what we believe in and let it be our guiding force or it will wither away.
