Humble Wisdom

Have you ever been put in your place by someone with authority over you? I remember one time; I was working as a shift manager at Pizza Hut. However, I was leaving for college the next day. The general manager was talking to another shift manager about something, so I walked over to join the conversation. The general manager told me it didn’t concern me, and I needed to get back to work. The truth hurt, but that’s what today’s verse is all about.

Instead of inviting myself to the conversation, I should have waited for an invitation. Just like these verses in Proverbs instruct us to do. It’s much better to be lifted up than put in your place. It’s better to be humble. That’s what this verse is really about: humility.

Paul wrote to the Philippians that they should “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). How can you live out those verses today?
