Devotion for Today
Jesus Conquered Death
Way back in the garden of Eden, God made one rule. “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17).
Yesterday we looked at Romans 6:23 where it says that the wages of sin is death. That’s what life has in store for all of us. But when Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He took our punishment upon Himself (Isaiah 53:5).
Yes, we will all still die, but a physical death, not a spiritual one. Jesus died so that we could have everlasting life reunited with the God who created us. That’s the heart of today’s verse. John 3:16 says it this way, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus overcame death. Romans 6:9 says, “We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.” And it doesn’t have dominion over those who belong to Jesus, either. And that’s us. I don’t know about you, but that’s something for which I am eternally grateful.
Prayer of Gospel Gratitude
Father God, thank You for overcoming the spiritual death life had in store for me. Thank You for loving me enough to die for me. You didn’t have to, but You chose to die for me because of Your great love. And because You died, You also rose. You defeated the hold Satan had on me. Thank You. Help me to live out my love and gratefulness for You today.
