Jesus is Near to the Brokenhearted
Nestled in the book of Genesis, we find the story of Hagar. She was a slave woman who was mistreated by her mistress and then sent away with her young son. She was exiled, weary, and alone, but God saw her. She lifted her voice and wept, (Genesis 21:16) and God heard her.
Hagar’s story is a beautiful reminder that we don’t have a God who is far away, but a God who is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). When our heart hurts, we can take it to Jesus. First Peter 5:7 tells us to cast our anxiety on Christ, because He cares for us.
In the book of Matthew, Jesus said that God clothes the lilies of the field, and He cares for the birds of the air, even though they are here today and gone tomorrow, so just imagine how much more He cares for us, the people created in His image.
Romans 8:26 says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” When our heart hurts so badly, we don’t even know what to pray, God still hears us. Today, I’m thankful that Jesus is near to us even when our hearts are breaking.
Prayer of Gospel Gratitude
Father God, thank You for being near to the brokenhearted, for hearing the groanings of my heart when I can’t find the words to pray. Thank You for loving me and always providing for me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
