Devotion for Today

Jesus is the Light of the World

John the Baptist came to bear witness to the Light of the World (John 1:6-8). He came to bear witness about Jesus. Jesus brought light to the world to give us direction (Psalm 119:105). He is a light to our paths and to our hearts.

But there’s more. Because of Christ, we can also share His light with others. Jesus said of us, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Jesus is a light shining out of us for the whole world to see.

Jesus is the Light of the World. A light to our paths, a light to our hearts, and a light for others. That’s three things I can be thankful for.

Prayer of Gospel Gratitude

Father God, thank You for sending Jesus to give light to the world. To say with the psalmist, “For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness” (Psalm 18:28), and I am so glad I’m no longer walking in darkness. Thank You for giving me light.
