Redeemed at the Feet of Jesus

You may wonder what an Old Testament quote from the book of Ruth is doing in our book about the feet of Jesus. Or maybe you already know. The book of Ruth is a vibrant foreshadowing to the coming Christ. Let’s look, shall we?

Ruth first meets Boaz in a field where she has been gleaning grain. She was looking for enough food for her and her mother-in-law to survive. But what she found was so much more.

Boaz took notice of her and instructed that she be given all the normal grain and then some. He wanted to take care of her right from the start. And he tells her to keep coming back for more.

Isn’t that a beautiful picture of Jesus? We come to Him with nothing, maybe just looking to survive, and He blows us out of the water with His love for us. He showers us with blessings we never even thought to ask for. And it gets better!

In Ruth chapter three, we find out that Boaz is a kindred redeemer for Ruth’s family line. In other words, Ruth thought she would live out her days as a widow on hand-me-outs, but Boaz had the power to change all of that. All Ruth needed to do was ask.

So, at the end of the harvest, she went to the threshing floor and waited for the perfect moment alone with Boaz. She lay at his feet and told him he was her family redeemer. Long story short, all Ruth had to do was ask Boaz to redeem her and he made it happen. And that’s how Jesus is with us. When we come to the feet of Jesus and ask Him to redeem us, He doesn’t even think twice. He is ready and waiting.

The best part is that it doesn’t matter what family you belong to, where you’re from, or any other qualification you can think up, Jesus is your redeemer (Galatians 3:28). In Isaiah 43:1, Jesus says, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” Rest in that today. Jesus has called you by name, and you are His.
