A Heart to Seek and Save the Lost

For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.

Luke 19:10

John 3:16 is one of the most well-known verses in the Bible: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” God the Father sent God the Son to earth because of His love for us.

We were separated from God by our sinfulness. Being a holy, righteous, and just God, He couldn’t just sweep our transgressions under the rug and pretend they never happened. Actions have consequences, and it just so happens that the consequence of sin is death—eternal separation from our creator (Romans 6:23).

It’s a price that all of us would have had to pay were it not for God sending His Son to pay it for us. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Isaiah 53:5 says: “he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” And 1 John 2:2: “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”

If it weren’t for the heart of Jesus, we would be condemned to eternal punishment (Matthew 25:46). That’s what we deserve.

All of us. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). But because of His love for us, God sent His Son, Jesus, to save us. His life on earth was a rescue mission. And despite being painful and heartbreaking, the mission was a success. Jesus did it. He paid the price for our sins and saved our souls.

And He did it because He holds us in His heart.
