Sharpening Wisdom
This is what is often referred to as a “coffee cup verse” – it’s often used to relate to church ministries or Bible studies. But have you ever actually seen iron sharpen iron? It’s an abrasive process. Two pieces of iron rub together sharpening the edges. There is a lot of friction going on and not the type you want to see in your churches women’s ministry. But that’s what sharpening iron is – doing the hard stuff.
Scripture calls us to encourage one another (1 Thess. 5:11), but it also calls us to exhort one another (Hebrews 3:13). We don’t grow if we all share coffee cup verses and smiles. Real growth happens in the trenches where life is hard. Sometimes we need tough love or someone to love us while we’re in the tough places.
The Bible calls the church the bride of Christ, which is very fitting. We are called to love Jesus and others in sickness and in health. For richer or poorer. Because, “love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends…” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
