The Beginning of Wisdom
Everything has to start somewhere, and the Bible says that the beginning of knowledge and wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
I used to hate that term—the fear of the Lord. Like why would I be frightened of Jesus?! If God is love, what do I have to be afraid of? Have you ever been there or asked that?
Our God is all powerful, all knowing, the beginning and the end of everything, and we need to respect the power and position He holds as creator of all. Because the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord and the beginning of the fear of the Lord is found in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God created…”
The fear of the Lord isn’t about being scared of Jesus; it’s about acknowledging how awesome our God is. The beginning of wisdom is knowing God created everything and that eternity sits in the palm of His hand. Matthew 10:28 puts it this way, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (NIV) A healthy understanding of who God is changes our motives and our actions, not just that, it changes us. Galatians 1:10 says this, “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” When we fear the Lord, we seek His approval. We look at everything through the lens of the gospel because the God who created everything, was willing to give it all up to save sinners like us.
