Devotion for Today
The Blood of Christ
God loves us so much He sent Jesus to die on a cross as punishment for our sins—yours and mine. But did you know that death on a cross was so much more than execution? It was reserved for the worst criminal as the ultimate punishment. Crucifixion was a horrific, prolonged torture leading only to death. That’s what Jesus endured for us.
When we say our sins are covered by the blood of Jesus, it’s blood that was poured out on the cross. Every drop was wrought with pain, but Jesus hung there because of His great love for us.
The apostle Paul said it this way in his letter to the Ephesians, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:7). And then it goes on to say, “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:13).
The blood of Jesus made a way for us to be forgiven for our sins. Jesus took our punishment on Himself so we could have an eternity to spend with the One who created us.
In the words of Isaiah, “He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed” (v. 53:5). And I am so thankful for the blood of Christ.
