John 13:34-35 (NIV)
Devotion for Today
The Call to Love
Imagine a mother baking a cake with her young daughter. They’ve gathered all the ingredients: the flour, eggs, butter, sugar, and cocoa powder. The little girl is excited to mix everything together, but the mother stops her and says, “The most important ingredient is missing.”
“What’s that?” the little girl asks, puzzled.
“Love,” replies the mother. “Without love, this cake won’t taste as good.”
This might seem like a cute interaction, but it holds a profound truth. Just like the cake, our lives as followers of Christ need the crucial ingredient of love. Without it, our actions, no matter how impressive, lack the flavor that distinguishes us as disciples of Christ.
In John 13:34-35, Jesus issues a new command to His followers: to love one another as He has loved us. This love isn’t just an add-on or optional extra—it’s central to our calling. It’s the key ingredient that gives meaning to our faith, depth to our service, and authenticity to our witness.
As we answer the King’s call, let’s remember to add the essential ingredient of love in everything we do. Because just like the cake, our lives will be infinitely richer, sweeter, and more impactful when baked with love.
