The King of Christmas

On that first Christmas so long ago, a King was born. He wasn’t born in a palace, and no bells rang announcing His birth across the countryside. There was no national celebration. In fact, very few people recognized Him as their coming King.

This tiny crown prince wasn’t seen as anything special. Yet, while the world slept the kingdom of God was ushered in by the birth of one babe in a manger. His birth signaled the start of something new.

“Repent, the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,”[1] that’s the message He began to peach when He became old enough to teach in the synagogues. This was it. This was what the people had been waiting for… but they didn’t get it. Not really.

They were hoping for a king whose power brought rulers to their knees in battle, not One who came to woo the hearts of His people. But that’s what Jesus was after.

What He is after.

That’s what the Kingdom of God is all about. Jesus wants to be the King of our hearts. The Kingdom of Heaven is here today—it’s here right now—because of that first Christmas so long ago. And because of that first Christmas, we can confidently celebrate as people who already belong to God’s Kingdom.

Jesus came to bring us into the fold. He didn’t come to tell us what to do or how to act. He didn’t come to give us more rules or regulations, He came to restore the relationship we were meant to have with God from the very beginning. Jesus is Immanuel; God with us.

From one-man God made everyone who inhabits the Earth. He made us with freewill to reach out to Him and find Him. To have a relationship with Him, because He is never far from us.[2] Acts 17:28 says it is in God we live and move and have our being.
