Anointing the Feet of Jesus

In today’s story, we once again find Mary of Bethany at the feet of Jesus. This time, she’s anointing them with oil and wiping them clean with her hair (John 12:3).

Judas Iscariot was taken aback at the frivolous use of the costly perfume. It was worth over 300 denarii (John 12:4). What could Mary be thinking?

But that’s the difference between Mary and Judas. Judas was thinking about what was best for himself. How could that ointment have been used in his life? Mary, on the other hand, was too busy loving on Jesus to be concerned with anything else.

More than likely, Mary had no idea what the significance of her actions was. There was no way she could have known that Jesus had less than a week left on earth. She was just humbly pouring out her love for the Messiah.

And that’s what we’re all called to do. We are called to love Jesus. To seek Him first (Matthew 6:33). After all, what good does it do to gain the entire world but lose your soul (Luke 9:25)? Judas probably feels the weight of that more than anyone. And that’s what Satan wants for us. He wants us to be happy and fulfilled apart from Jesus. But Jesus wants us to have an abundant life in Him (John 10:10).

I want to close by sharing John 6:27. It says, “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” My hope for you today is that you find your worth in Jesus. Not just your worth, but your purpose. Seek Him out and live your life at His feet.
