Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly ~ Colossians 3:16

Devotion for Today · The Heart of Jesus

God Sees Us

ByHeather Hart

This devotional series is called The Heart of Jesus. It consists of 28 devotions that are overflowing with God’s love for you. This devotion is about how God sees us. Jesus has a heart that sees.

God Sees Us

So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”

Genesis 16:13

The woman had been bleeding for twelve years. She’d been to all the doctors and tried all the things. Her money was gone, and so was her hope.

Then she heard about Jesus.

He could do what the doctors couldn’t. This was her chance to be well. She knew if she could just get close enough to Him, if she could touch just the hem of His garment, she would be healed.

But therein lay the problem. She was considered unclean. If she was noticed in the crowd, it would cause an uproar. Anyone who touched her—even accidentally—would become unclean themselves.

But if she could do it without being noticed… well, maybe she could be healed without disturbing those around her.

As the crowd pressed in around Jesus, she joined them. Just one in a sea of a million faces. Reaching out, she touched the fringe of Jesus’ garment and was instantly healed.

Mission accomplished, she fell back, and the crowd swallowed her up. She was ready to walk away, probably singing and dancing the whole way. But Jesus had other plans. He wasn’t ready to let her go.

“Who touched me?”

She didn’t respond right away. Though I imagine she froze in her tracks and the blood drained from her face. She had no business being there, and I’m sure she thought she was about to be put in her place.

The disciples tried to dissuade Jesus from looking for her. There were tons of people around them, of course someone touched Him. But Jesus didn’t back down.

Can you picture His eyes finding her in the crowd? Because He knew it was her. She was caught.

Ready to accept the consequences, she fell at His feet and told Him her story. Only, He didn’t rebuke her. Instead, He said, “Daughter, go in peace. Your faith has made you well.”

For a woman who lived on the fringe of society for more than a decade, I imagine those words brought tears to her eyes. Not only was she healed, but the Messiah saw her. We don’t know her name, but Jesus called her ‘daughter’.

I don’t know what you’re struggling with, sweet sister, but Jesus does. Back in the book of Genesis, Hagar named God El Roi: The God who sees me. And He sees you, too. He sees your struggle and knows your pain. And He also knows your faith.
